About Cockroaches

What Are They & How To Identify

While there are many species of cockroaches, they are typically oval-shaped, flattened, reddish-brown to black in color, and around 1 1/8 to 2 inches long. They hide in dark, damp, confined places during the day and are active at night (mostly found in bathrooms and kitchens). This pest poses severe health risks once indoors, especially as an asthma trigger in children.

Roaches are particularly fond of starches, sweets, greasy food, and meats. Easy sources of food – like dirty dishes in the sink, pet food on the floor, or crumbs on the counter will draw them in.

How To Tell If You Have Cockroaches

Roach Droppings/Feces: Cockroaches produce a large number of feces, their droppings tend to remain close to their nesting or feeding areas. Roach droppings look like specks of pepper or coffee grounds.

Skin & Egg Casings: Cockroaches go through several lifecycle stages to reach adulthood. As they grow, they shed they molt anywhere between 5-8 times before they become adults.

Cockroach egg casings look like small, pill-shaped capsules. Casings may have recently been deposited by the female, in which case they may hatch soon. Older egg casings have probably already hatched.

How To Prevent Getting Cockroaches

Seal Outside Cracks: Perform regular maintenance on your home to seal up cracks, fix screens, windows, and cover open areas. Make it hard for roaches to get in, and that will keep them away.

Clean Your Kitchen: Cockroaches need a food source, and if you have an untidy kitchen, that will be more than enough for them. They will look for anything to survive such as: crumbs, garbage, pet food, dishrags, open food containers, and spilled food.

Keep It Tidy: Cockroaches love dark, humid, and cluttered areas (basements, laundry rooms, drains). If you tend to let things pile up, you are giving these pests the perfect place to hide.
